Apple A4 Processor

The iPhone 4 processor, the A4, is manufactured by Samsung and it’s been under production since March 2010. Currently it is used in iPad, iPhone and iPod devices manufactured by Apple. It has a level 1 Cache of 32kB instruction and 32kB data and the level 2 cache is designed for a 512 kB size. The maximum CPU clock rate is around 800 MHz for iPod Touch the 4thgeneration and around 1 GHz for the iPad.

The chipset is based on 45nm technology and the ARM v7 instruction set which delivers 32 bit instruction set architecture for reduced instruction set computers and v7 is currently the latest version on the market. The A4 is used with a PowerVR SGX 535 graphics processor and Samsung named this chipset. The clock speeds have not been published for any device that uses the combination.

The A4 uses the Cortex A8 core which was enhanced by the Instrinsity company ( Apple subsidiary ). The A4 doesn’t include any RAM modules but the PoP installation (Package on Package) makes that a lesser bad thing.

Some time after its launch, Richard Doherthy, director of the consulting firm Envisioneering Group said in an interview that there’s nothing on the market that could bring his ARM v7, Cortex A8 processor down as power consumption, performance, CPU clocks per watt and processing power per size all score high numbers in many reviews.

The fact that Apple owns this processor is an extra edge over the competition because this processor simply has no worthy rivals in its class as others spent less on the development of ARM based SOCs. Thanks to the good core design, many manufacturers used the Cortex A8 for different hardware implementations as up to 1 GHz it doesn’t heat up. With proper cooling these A8 based implementations could be clocked up to 1.3-1.4 MHz but as Apple doesn’t want any moving parts in its devices and the fact that a cooling fan or duct could increase the product dimensions it’s hard to believe that Apple or anyone else for that matter will implement that.

These technologies are meant to improve all lifestyles and the prices keep going down as many technologies age and newer ones are developed to take their place. This means that eventually, anyone will be able to buy modern technology devices and as they are developed every month they can never be considered too obsolete a good example is the capability of playing Full HD content for up to 10 hours without a recharge as consumption has been severely reduced by Apple and Samsung design teams.
